A little culture, whatever the weather
Swap grey skies for the Royal Pavilion’s wonderfully extravagant interiors. This former royal retreat makes a rather splendid escape from the everyday, with rooms that reward a leisurely look rather than a hurried lap.
Nearby, Brighton Museum & Art Gallery offers another indoor adventure. Make an afternoon of it, leaving time for coffee afterwards. Or settle into the Duke of York’s Picturehouse for a film: a lovely excuse to switch off your phone, sink into your seat and let someone else supply the drama.
There’s no shortage of sparkle at the Theatre Royal Brighton. SIX runs from 1-5 December, bringing Henry VIII’s wives into the spotlight with a pop-concert twist. Legally Blonde follows from 15 December-2 January, offering a cheerful dose of pink-powered escapism.
For something more intimate, explore Artists Open Houses on 5-6 and 12-13 December. Local makers welcome visitors into their homes and studios, making this a particularly personal way to discover Brighton’s creative side - and find a Christmas present with a story.

A winter soundtrack
December’s gig diary gives music lovers plenty to work with. Ocean Colour Scene play the Brighton Centre on 8 December, while UB40 featuring Ali Campbell arrive on 11 December. Choose your soundtrack, book dinner beforehand and make a proper evening of it.
January has its own reasons to head out: Emeli Sandé performs at Brighton Dome on 25 January.
There’s nothing compulsory about a quiet January. Jack Whitehall brings Bad Influence to the Brighton Centre on 28 January, while Romesh Ranganathan Will Change Your Life comes to Brighton Dome on 21 February. Both offer an excellent alternative to another evening on the sofa.
Throughout winter, Brighton’s smaller venues also reward a little curiosity. Look beyond the headline names for jazz, emerging bands, comedy and cabaret.
Back at No. 124 Brighton, book some downtime at Field Trip Spa, then linger over dinner at Pearly Cow. A little sea air, something delicious and nowhere to rush: winter by the coast has its own lovely rhythm.

Fresh air, independent finds and time to unwind
Across all three months, take a promenade stroll when conditions allow. Around dusk, watch for starling murmurations above the piers; nature supplies the choreography, though sightings are never guaranteed.
The Lanes and North Laine are equally good for unhurried wandering, with independent shops, vintage finds and café stops. December gift hunting becomes January browsing and February’s just-because treats.
