Meet the Makers

Meet the Makers at No. 124 Brighton and discover some of the artwork you can spot around No. 124 Brighton. Paintings, photos, graphics, sketches, so much of what makes up the artwork at No. 124 is inspired by the colourful city.

Name of Maker: Katie Charleson
Name of pieces: Blush Checks, Dashes & Sail on Silver Girl ii
Where to find: Field Trip Spa

Katies has created three wall quilts for Field Trip Spa, employing a variety of quilting techniques, printed patterns and grounding colours. These contrasting elements are unified by her interest in creating satisfying compositions and rhythmic, shifting textures that draw the viewer in close. She usse the blocky, repetitive nature of screen printing idiosyncratically to create depth and fluidity, exploring materiality and surface.

Katie used synthetic cold-water dyes as well as inks and dyes brewed from food waste and locally foraged plant matter. She hand painted the resulting inks directly onto screen, the base fabric and on top of the printed pigments, to add a depth of colour and fluidity to the structures and shapes present in the work. Physically breaking down and combining materials to create colour feels alchemical, and adds a layer of uncertainty and uniqueness every time the process is approached.

Name of Maker: Richard Rawlins
Name of piece: Jab Jumbie Recoil
Where to find: The staircase leading to Pearly Cow

Richard drew on his Caribbean heritage (he is Trinidadian) and research to make totemic drawings of a Trinidad carnival character called the Moko Jumbie, which he then merged with other carnival characters, (in this piece, the Jab) that are rooted in the Caribbean experience of enslavement, indentureship, and migration.

“Moko” means healer in Central Africa and “jumbie” is a colloquial Caribbean term for a ghost or spirit. In Carnival lore the jumbies are ‘spirits’ that followed the enslaved Africans across the Atlantic to their destinations in the Caribbean, walking on stilts – and his imaginings – to the Antilles and wherever else they eventually resided, creating an African diaspora. There they watched over us, watched us birthed, watched us toil, watched us play, watched our pain, sorrow, and our joy, and helped with the process of healing. Today they are still watching. Today we are still healing.

Name of Maker: Jack Brindley
Name of piece: Circular Grid Study (Amethyst)
Where to find: The Bar in Pearly Cow

The work is made up of 5 glass panels, back lit from behind and will sit as a central feature to The Bar.  It features a grid-like exploration of segments of a circle. The idea behind using a repeated pattern is to encourage the eye to skate over the surface of the window, constantly moving from one zone to the next, never to rest on a singular motif.

This results in a fluid and dynamic contribution to the surrounding architecture. Different types of glass with a variation of surface textures have been used, each reflects and refracts the light in its own unique way, bringing a sense of depth and movement to The Bar.

These windows bring together historic processes and materials such as Silver-Stain, which has been used in stained glass since 1300, and contemporary techniques such as glass bonding, and toughening. There are 455 pieces of individually hand cut glass, (some of them no bigger than 20mm) with roughly a quarter of the glass hand painted with enamels and stains before being fired in a kiln. .

Name of Maker: Corinna Wilson
Name of piece: Abstract Oasis
Where to find: The Vinyl Library

Working her Brighton studio, Corinna  creates one off pieces of art in wool using a combination of hand tufted and machine based techniques. She grew up in a traditional household surrounded by tapestries, cross stitch and patchwork quilts which instilled in her a love of creating, crafting and textiles. Corinna aims to tread a line between form and abstraction to allow the viewer some room for their own interpretations. I love the textures and 3D form that the works take on in wool and the nostalgic nod to traditional tapestries.

This piece was inspired by a recent visit to Morocco where I visited several botanical gardens and was inspired by not only the beautiful array of flowers and plants but also the juxtaposition of the tiles and patterns found there which I have reflected both in the earthy tones and ornamental accents.

Name of Maker: Marcelina Amelia
Name of piece: You are a Harvest Moon
Where to find: The Bar

Marcelina works with a mixed media approach to print, painting and drawing. She often draws inspirations from her Polish heritage, looking to religious iconography and folk tales, as well as childhood memories, the power of dreams, spirituality, sexuality, and the human condition.

Marcelina says, ‘I like to play at the tense borders between lust and innocence; joy and sadness; fun and pain. My interest in juxtaposition comes from my origins and fascination with East European culture which was eloquently described by Grayson Perry as ‘nowhere else could such horrific grief be met with such fairly-tale romanticism’. I tend to utilise nature as a metaphor for everyday feelings and headaches. My recent work also dwells into themes of self acceptance, body positivity, representations of the female sexuality, gender, migration, and society. Although some of the subjects I take on are often quite dark I like to think that there is some humour and light in my finished artwork.’
