Wann hast du mit dem Fotografieren angefangen?
Meine erste „richtige“ Kamera habe ich 2017 in die Hand genommen, eine alte Spiegelreflexkamera, die meine Eltern nicht mehr benutzten. Aber eigentlich begleitet mich die Fotografie schon seit meiner Kindheit. Ich habe meine alte Kompaktkamera geliebt und sogar mit sieben Jahren ein Fototagebuch von unserer Familienreise nach Australien geführt. Rund 20 Jahre später zeigte mir ein Freund, wie man die Kamera manuell bedient, und das öffnete mir die Tür zu allem, was ich seitdem gelernt habe.
Wo sind deine Lieblingsplätze zum Fotografieren, die du Besuchern von Brighton empfehlen würdest?
Ich liebe es, durch das Naturschutzgebiet Clifton und hinunter nach Seven Dials zu schlendern. Dort gibt es viele hübsche Häuser und Gärten, und von der Anhöhe hat man einen fantastischen Blick über die Stadt. In Seven Dials findet man außerdem einige tolle Cafés und Pubs für eine gemütliche Pause während der Erkundungstour.
Wo kann man den Sonnenaufgang oder Sonnenuntergang am besten genießen?
Die Küste ist dafür ideal, und ich habe festgestellt, dass die Jahreszeit einen großen Einfluss darauf hat, wie schön ein Sonnenuntergang ist. Im Sommer geht die Sonne am Strand etwas früher hinter den Gebäuden unter, sodass man sie wunderbar von der Seebrücke aus beobachten kann. Im Winter hingegen geht sie über dem Meer unter, was in Kombination mit dem Wetter oft für ein viel dramatischeres Schauspiel sorgt.
Sie haben einen freien Tag – wie würden Sie ihn am liebsten verbringen?
Der Stamner Park ist wirklich wunderschön und bietet die dringend benötigte Auszeit im Grünen. Packen Sie einfach ein Picknick ein, machen Sie es sich am Hang gemütlich und genießen Sie den Blick über den Park. Auch One Garden Brighton ist einen Besuch wert: Der traumhafte ummauerte Garten und das Restaurant servieren regional angebautes Gemüse aus eigenem Anbau.
Welche Veranstaltungen in Brighton gefallen dir am besten? Worauf freust du dich im neuen Jahr besonders?
Brighton Fringe und Pride sind immer ein Highlight! Tolle Atmosphäre und super Performances, dazu viele Pop-up-Bars und Locations zum Entdecken.

Einige sollen sogar für König Georg IV. gebaut worden sein, damit er sie heimlich nutzen konnte. Man kann Führungen buchen, um einige davon zu erkunden, und viele haben noch Eingänge in Orten wie Prizm, die aber leider für die Öffentlichkeit gesperrt sind.
Welchen Tipp würdest du angehenden Fotografen geben? Deine besten Tipps für das perfekte Instagram-Foto?
Lass dich nicht von der Ausrüstungskultur mitreißen und lege dich nicht zu früh auf einen bestimmten Stil fest. Bleib offen für alle Stile und probiere sie aus, bis du den richtigen für dich gefunden hast. Tausche dich mit anderen Fotografen aus, die dich inspirieren. Soziale Medien eignen sich dafür hervorragend, und du lernst unheimlich viel über Komposition und Bearbeitungsstile, indem du dir die Arbeiten anderer ansiehst. Und lerne die Grundlagen: Es gibt zwar fantastische Kameras, die dir die ganze Arbeit abnehmen, aber ich bin überzeugt, dass du viel bessere Fotos machst, wenn du die grundlegende Funktionsweise verstehst, als wenn du die Kamera immer alles entscheiden lässt.
Gerade in den sozialen Medien ist es wichtig, sich nicht zu sehr darauf zu versteifen, Trends zu folgen. Wenn deine Arbeiten zufällig einem aktuellen Trend entsprechen, umso besser – nutze das zu deinem Vorteil. Ich denke aber auch, dass man einfach Arbeiten machen sollte, die einem ein gutes Gefühl geben und einen dazu inspirieren, weiterzumachen. Auf diese Weise entwickelt man tatsächlich einen persönlichen Stil und folgt nicht einfach nur dem aktuellen Favoriten.
Wenn man auf Reisen Brighton verlässt, was vermisst man dann am meisten?
Das Meer, die Gemeinschaft und die Möglichkeit, alles bequem zu Fuß zu erreichen. Und ich freue mich auch immer darauf, wieder ins Meer zu gehen, egal zu welcher Jahreszeit.
Wo sind die angesagtesten Orte in Brighton? Restaurants? Cafés? Bäckereien? Unabhängige Läden?
Meine Lieblingsorte in Brighton sind definitiv eher alternativ. Ich empfehle immer wieder Läden wie The Bee's Mouth, The Hope & Ruin, Green Door Store und The Prince Albert für großartige Live-Musik und leckere Drinks! Bei Resident Records gibt es außerdem Neuerscheinungen, viele lokale Bands und Independent-Labels sind vertreten, und oft finden dort auch intime Release-Shows von fantastischen Künstlern statt. Für guten Kaffee empfehle ich Small Batch für eine richtig gute Tasse und Presuming Ed's für echtes Brighton-Feeling. Es gibt auch unzählige tolle Vintage- und Independent-Läden – zu viele, um sie alle aufzuzählen, aber Family Store ist mein Favorit für coole T-Shirts, Buttons oder Fanzines.
